How Does Organizational Change REALLY Happen?

One person at a time…….in my experience, most organizations focus on what a given change will do for for the organization rather than the employees. While it is important to communicate the change from an organizational perspective, it is equally if not more important to communicate what the change will do for employees. If an organization wants to get employee buy in, it must, in my opinion, start communicating early about how the change benefits  both organization and employee.  Doing so will start creating the employee “critical mass” needed for successful change implementation!

Reframing “Change”

In my work with client organizations, I now know that an organization’s perception of “change” needs to shift.  Rather than viewing change as an “event”, it needs to be viewed as a mind-set or way of doing business.  Failure to do so will result in organizations being in an ongoing reactive rather than proactive mode.  This shift can only come with education and a consistent message from leadership AND there are tools/strategies that can help!  A good change management strategy like the one developed by Prosci International that is partnered with Fierce Conversations will lead to the successful shift in thinking about change: It IS a mind-set rather than an event.
